VARIOUS
"SLOW BURNING"
(GLASGOW UNDERGROUND)
2LP/CD
These days, compilations are
ten-a-penny. Instead of just gathering together some suitable
material, Glasgow Underground have done it just a little bit
differently. What you have here is not simply a collection of other
label’s music — it is a unique compendium of music, old and new,
that they think carries the spirit of Glasgow Underground.
The idea of compilations is a great
one. It’s just that they’ve been done to death. So when it came to
putting one together for Glasgow Underground, label owner Kevin
McKay decided that ‘Slowburning’ would hopefully be
different from the rest. It would take the tracks that have inspired Glasgow
Underground and add a special Scottish twist to the whole affair!
Three of the tracks involved have
been exclusively remixed – at no cost to the record labels involved
– by (Kevin and partner Andy Carrick’s) Muzique Tropique
and are available first on this album. One cut (the Deep Dish Mix of Swing
52’s ‘Colour Of My Skin’) was only previously available on a
DMC America release. Black Rascals’ ‘Blaze Theme Track’
is a classic Blaze record that has never before been available on any
compilation, and UBQ Project’s ‘When I Fell In Love’
(that has an early 90’s Ibizan summer feel with a sticky sweet
vocal) is harder to find than a good manager at GC Zürich. Jii Hoo
and ‘Let Me Luv You’ is probably the best on here with its
chugging beats and rolling bass that create the purest dance groove
with some sweet male vocals hovering over the top. We are also treated
to a fine mix of Jori Hulkkonen’s ‘Seven Nites Seven Dayz’,
all rounded off with a Chilli Funk/East West style jazz funker from Deep
Sensation with ‘Get Up’.
So, as you can see, "Now That’s
What We Call Deep House Volume 62" this is not. Hope you like!
