VARIOUS (DJ YOUNGSTA)
'DUBSTEP ALLSTARS VOL. 2'
TEMPA
CD
(SEPTEMBER 2005)
Mixed by DJ Youngsta, this follow up to the groundbreaking first edition of Tempa Recordings' “Dubstep Allstars” series represent the breadth of dubstep, mixing up sub-bass, halfstep beats, electro arpeggios and endless influences.
‘Dubstep Allstars Vol. 2’ is a masterful mix, using 100% exclusive unreleased tracks. Most of the major playas are here for your edutainment and edification: Geeneus, El-B, Kode 9 feat Daddi Gee, Digital Mystikz, D1 and Loefah.
Ace line up, but what tunes: Geeneus just rolls it out on ‘Congo’ – simple bassline simplicity and detonation; El-B’s ‘Amazon’ is deep in it as befits an originator, one of those fragmented beats, positively glued together with a bass science fearsome to mere mortals on the receiving end. Best of all, under the title ‘Babylon Dub Mix’ Kode 9 revisits many of the defining moments of my favourite tune of 2004, ‘Sign Of The Dub’ on Hyperdub. This time the emphasis is even further into dub, and its totally brilliant stuff, mind blowing production once again, upping the tempo and emerging with a full blown dancehall scorcha. The Digital Mystikz are awarded a whole side, and proceed to Give Jah Glory with all due respect, D1’s ‘Crack Bong’ is uncompromising and brandishes a totally original bass sound recorded inside a very large bronze chamber, leaving it to Loefah’s Truly Dread in full blown steppers mode, flying congas and a bottom end that’s just off the scale. You’ll feel it hundreds of yards away.
