BONOBO
"ONE OFF REMIXES AND B-SIDES"
(TRU THOUGHTS)
2LP/CD
[RELEASE: AUGUST 2002]
The album
that catapulted Bonobo (aka Simon Green) in the public’s
imagination was ‘Animal Magic’, his debut album release on Tru Thoughts
Records. The word of mouth about his music spread quickly with major
label interest and a subsequent transfer to Ninja Tune, who are lining up to
release Bonobo’s second album towards the end of 2002. To complete
the picture, Tru Thoughts have decided to release this compilation
featuring tracks from 12”s, 7”s and remixes (especially after they found out
bootlegs of Simon’s music appearing).
The songs on
this album capture many different moods and evoke different sceneries (check
the Italian feel of ‘The Sicilian’ and Arabian feel of ‘4 Ton Mantis’)
whilst retaining a recognisable musical signature of its own. This gives
some indication as to why Bonobo’s music has been licensed to over 50
compilation albums across the world, covering a variety of music
scenes. Having been picked up on by advertising agencies for this enigmatic
feel in his music it was the Bonobo remix and re-interpretation of
Pilote’s ‘Turtle’ which was used by One 2 One in their UK advertising
campaign and quickly became known as “that whistle tune”.
Also
included is the Bonobo remix of Mechanical Me’s ‘Beachy Head’
as Simon has rarely done vocal tunes. Here the female vocal over lazy
beats is like a siren enticing you to come closer – truly intoxicating.
Other highlights include ‘Scuba’ and ‘The Sicilian’ for the first time
together on CD.
Although
this is a compilation album, the individual musical style of Bonobo
makes ‘One Offs, Remixes And B-Sides’ work together as a pleasurable
album for anyone who enjoys great distinctive music.
