Dubble D drops his second artist album for the 20:20 Vision label and it’s a funky rumble in the electronic jungle that maintains the label's standard.
More in keeping with the style of releases on Ninja Tune, ‘Playin Out’ is far from being a mere handful of new tracks by your average house producer.
Compared to 2005’s ‘Reachin Out’ album, which was riddled with guest vocalists and fellow producers who dropped in to twiddle a few knobs, ‘Playin’ Out’ is remarkably lean and shows off Danny Ward’s outstanding feel for percussion.
‘Road’ and ‘Stumble’ are smooth and sweet hip hop instrumentals with taut drums and unmistakable Manchurian grit. The Dilla tribute ‘Still Love You’ is fittingly lovely and the sleazy ‘Hot’ smears afro groove over nu school breaks. ‘Woof’ sweats and smiles with its pumped up drums and wild synth line while the Jazzanova-esque ‘Le Don’ rains down cowbells over Rio carnivale. ‘Transistor Radio’ seems a little too obvious coming out of such sublime, broken beat territory, with its digital four to the floor rhythm, but the twisted glitch of ‘Wriggle’ and Derrick Carter homage ‘Coleman’ will send violent tremors through even the most rigid booties.
